How to List Your Surplus Material on Calloy

Listing surplus material on Calloy takes about two minutes per item. Here is exactly how to do it so your listing gets attention and sells quickly.

Step 1: Gather your material information. Before you open the app, know the alloy grade, dimensions, and approximate weight. For metals, this means the specific alloy (6061-T6, not just "aluminum") and the form (plate, round bar, flat bar, tube). Measure the actual dimensions, not the nominal size from when you bought it. If you cut a piece off a 48-inch plate, measure what remains.

Step 2: Take clear photos. Use your phone. Shoot in good lighting, ideally near a window or under shop fluorescents. Include at least one photo showing the full piece with a ruler or tape measure for scale. If there is a mill cert sticker or heat lot marking, photograph that too. Buyers trust listings with clear, honest photos.

Step 3: Set your price. Check what the material costs new from a distributor, then price your surplus at 40 to 60 percent of that. Remember, your buyer is getting faster delivery and no shipping cost, so they are paying a premium over scrap value but still saving compared to retail. If you are unsure, start slightly higher. You can always drop the price if it does not move.

Step 4: Write a useful description. Skip the marketing language. Machinists want facts. State the alloy, temper or condition, dimensions, quantity, and any relevant details like whether the surface is mill finish or has been machined. Mention if you have the mill cert available. If there are any defects, scratches, or cut marks, say so upfront. Honesty builds trust and prevents wasted trips.

Step 5: Choose the right category. Calloy supports categories including raw metals, plastics, tooling, consumables, and fixtures. Pick the one that matches your item. If you are listing cutting tools, specify whether they are new, lightly used, or need resharpening.

Step 6: Publish and respond quickly. Once your listing is live, buyers can message you directly. Response time matters. Shops looking for material locally are usually on a deadline. If you can respond within an hour during business hours, you will close more sales.

Bonus tip: list in batches. If you have a rack of surplus, spend thirty minutes listing everything at once. Buyers browsing your profile will see multiple items and may bundle purchases, saving both of you time.
